The Zones of Wellbeing: Thriving, Surviving, Struggling
Helping people identify where they’re at and what supports suit that zone.
Wellbeing isn’t static – it fluctuates, often shifting subtly between different emotional and mental “zones.” Understanding which zone you’re in can help you respond more effectively to your needs and access the right kind of support. Let’s explore three common wellbeing zones: thriving, surviving, and struggling – and how to navigate them with clarity and care.
Thriving: Energy, Connection, and Growth When you’re thriving, you feel purposeful, connected, and resilient. You’re not just coping, you’re flourishing. You’re able to manage challenges, maintain healthy relationships, and feel optimistic about the future.
Signs You’re Thriving:
- You feel motivated and emotionally balanced
- You have regular moments of joy and engagement
- You’re taking care of your physical and emotional health proactively
Support That Helps:
Even when thriving, support matters. Keep building your wellbeing with:
- Regular check-ins with yourself or a coach/mentor
- Stretch goals for personal or professional growth
- Practices like gratitude, mindfulness, and reflection to sustain momentum
Surviving: Functioning, But Fatigued In this zone, you’re getting through the day, but often feel overwhelmed or emotionally depleted. You may appear “fine” on the outside but feel disconnected or stuck on the inside. Surviving is common during high-stress periods or after prolonged mental load.
Signs You’re Surviving:
- You’re ticking off tasks but feel flat or disengaged
- Emotions feel muted or numb
- You’re reactive or irritable more than usual
Support That Helps:
Surviving is a sign you need to refuel. Helpful strategies include:
- Talking to someone you trust to offload and reflect
- Simplifying commitments to reduce cognitive load
- Building in rest, gentle movement, and joy without guilt
- Seeking short-term professional support to reset
Struggling: Overwhelmed and Unwell When you’re in the struggling zone, daily functioning feels hard. Emotions may feel intense or unmanageable, and even basic tasks can be draining. This zone may include experiences of anxiety, depression, or burnout, and it’s okay to name it.
Signs You’re Struggling:
- Difficulty getting out of bed or completing everyday tasks
- Feeling hopeless, disconnected, or emotionally flooded
- Withdrawal from others or increased reliance on unhelpful coping mechanisms
Support That Helps:
This zone requires compassionate, structured support. Key options include:
- Professional mental health care (GP, psychologist, counsellor)
- Support from close family/friends who can check in regularly
- Workplace or community resources like EAP or peer support programs
- Restoring basics: sleep, nutrition, hydration, medication if prescribed
Why Naming Your Zone Matters Self-awareness is a powerful wellbeing tool. Knowing which zone you’re in allows you to respond with appropriate strategies rather than pushing through blindly. It also helps you communicate clearly with others about the kind of support you need.
Whatever zone you’re in, you deserve support that meets you where you are. Recognising your current state isn’t weakness, it’s wisdom. And it’s the first step toward regaining balance and building a more resilient foundation for the days ahead.
